CEREC Gives You Same-Day Crowns
Not that long ago, if you needed a crown, you had to submit to multiple appointments. Not only that, you had to undergo uncomfortable impressions in order for the dentist to create the crown and you often had to have a temporary crown placed while you waited for the permanent crown to be made. Today, Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics (CEREC) lets you have a crown implanted in one simple appointment.
What is CEREC?
CEREC is a type of computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) dentistry that was created in 1980 and is used to create dental restorations. Using CAD/CAM, the dentist is able to construct, produce and insert ceramic or porcelain crowns in a single appointment rather than the several appointment process that was necessary in the past.
How Does CEREC Work?
After it is determined that you need a crown, the dentist removes all decay in your natural tooth. A handpiece is used to reshape the tooth. A 3D digital image is taken of the tooth which is then displayed on a computer screen. The dentist then designs the tooth while you watch the process. When the design is completed, the CEREC creates the tooth, a process that takes about 15 minutes and that your dentist may let you observe. After the crown is made and glazed it can be cemented.
Benefits of CEREC
Your dentist may recommend a crown if you have a decayed, cracked or chipped tooth. The CEREC machine allows the dentist to design and create a crown that looks just like your natural tooth in a matter of minutes. There is no need to send an impression to a lab and wait for a permanent crown to be delivered. Many people also find it difficult to bite down on the substance necessary to create impressions, so eliminating the need for impressions is another benefit to CEREC.
If you have been told by your dentist that you need a crown because one of your teeth is damaged, decayed or cracked, contact Narjes Abtahi, DDS to learn more about CEREC. You can have your tooth repaired and a crown placed the same day as your visit. Call the office at 703-724-0015 or visit them online to learn more about whether CEREC is right for you. www.yourcommunitysmile.com
